MNEK vs Alphabeat is officially the decade’s most unlikely feud

And the 'Most Unexpected Beef Award' goes to...

By Will Stroude

Taylor and Katy, Nicki and Cardi, Azealia Banks and the Republic of Ireland… it can be hard keeping up with all the celebrity feuds going on at any one point, but one which we certainly didn’t see coming was that between MNEK and late noughties pop group Alphabeat.

The unlikely drama began on Monday night (25 February) when relentlessly perky band Alphabeat announced they were reuniting to release brand new music, having previously gone on hiatus in 2013.

The Danish group, who scored four UK Top 10 singles between 2007-09 including ‘Fascination’ and ‘10,000 Nights’, revealed on Twitter that they had a new single coming this Friday (1 March) after six years away.

Within an hour and a half, however, the group had been publicly slammed by British pop singer and producer MNEK, who took to Twitter to call out the band for a lack of “professionalism” when they worked together almost ten years ago.

MNEK, whose debut album Language was finally released last year, becoming one of the year’s most important queer records in the process, accused Alphabeat’s members of walking out on him during a studio session when he was just 15.

“remember when u guys had a session with me and left 2 hours in cos u weren’t feeling it? me too, i stan professionalism”, the now 24-year-old wrote in response to the band’s announcement on Twitter.

Admitting he had been a fan of the six-piece prior to the incident, he added: “i used to stan alphabeat as well, now i just know them as that group with them two white brehs who literally left me in the studio by myself when i was 15, sad.”

We gotta say, we did not see this one coming. Will there be a Taylor-Katy-style olive branch in the mail at some point? We guess we better watch this space…
