Martin Freeman says fans felt ‘betrayed’ ‘Sherlock’ didn’t end with a gay romance

Martin Freeman said fans felt ‘betrayed’ that Sherlock did not end with a gay ending.
The actor starred as Dr John Watson alongside Benedict Cumberbatch in the popular BBC programme and although the show is currently on hiatus, it’s unlikely the show will return in the near future.
And while speaking to Lauren Laverne on BBC Radio 4, Freeman revealed that people felt ‘betrayed’ that the characters didn’t go ‘off into the sunset together’.
He said: “The reaction can be quite intense. So, by the time we filmed the last ones there were some fans who were so adamant that John and Sherlock were gay.
“They knew it and they knew that Steven [Moffatt] and Mark [Gatiss] were going to write an episode where we held hands off into the sunset together, and so when that didn’t happen there was a chunk of people going, ‘This is betrayal’.”
