LGBT group slams Michelle Rodriguez’s trans assassin thriller ‘Tomboy’

By Will Stroude

LGBT visibility group GLAAD has slammed upcoming action movie Tomboy for ‘sensationalising’ transgender issues.

The Walter Hill-directed Hollywood film is set to star Resident Evil‘s Michelle Rodriguez as a hitman who is double-crossed by gangsters and falls into the hands of rogue surgeon known as ‘The Doctor,’ (played by Alien’s Sigourney Weaver) who forces him to undergo gender reassignment surgery. Now a woman, the assassin sets out for revenge…

“We haven’t read the script, but it’s disappointing to see filmmakers turning what is a life-saving medical procedure for transgender people into a sensationalistic plot device,” GLAAD’s director of programs for transgender media, Nick Adams, told The Hollywood Reporter.

“We are at a crucial moment in the public’s understanding of transgender issues, and stories like these have the potential to undermine the progress we’ve worked so hard to achieve.”

Producers for Tomboy are yet to respond to GLAAD’s criticism, but filming on the picture is set to get underway in Vancouver, Canada, on November 9.

Meanwhile Rodriguez recently had another action-packed starring turn in the video for Demi Lovato’s new single ‘Confident’, which sees the pair have the mother off all girl-fights – click here to check it out.
