Jude Law has defended the decision to not make Dumbledore ‘explicitly gay’ in Fantastic Beasts sequel
The actor was revealed to be playing the iconic wizard in the upcoming sequel

Jude Law has defended why Albus Dumbledore will not be “explicitly gay” in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.
It was announced last year that the movie, a sequel to 2016’s Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, will feature a young Albus Dumbledore played by Law alongside Gellert Grindelwald, played by Johnny Depp.
Since the announcement, fans have wondered if the film will address Dumbledore’s relationship with the dark wizard, whom he was in love with.
However, director David Yates said that the film will not directly reference the wizard’s sexuality and simply said “not explicitly”.
Dumbledore’s sexuality was confirmed years ago by Harry Potter author J.K Rowling and there was uproar when his sexuality was not to be explored in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts sequel.
But now Law has defended the decision and said fans are only “getting to know Albus” in this film.
He told Entertainment Weekly: “Jo Rowling revealed some years back that Dumbledore was gay. That was a question I actually asked Jo and she said, ‘Yes, he’s gay’.
“But as with humans, your sexuality doesn’t necessarily define you; he’s multifaceted. I suppose the question is; ‘How is Dumbledore’s sexuality depicted in this film?’
“What you’ve got to remember is that this is only the second Fantastic Beasts film in a series and what’s brilliant about Jo’s writing is how she reveals her characters, peels them to the heart over time.
“You’re just getting to know Albus in this film, and there’s obviously a lot more to come.
“We learn a little about his past in the beginning of this film, and characters and their relationships will unfold naturally which I’m excited to reveal. But we’re not going to reveal everything all at once.”
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald will hit cinemas November 16, 2018.
