Jinkx Monsoon shines as mouthy Christmas musical show returns to London

By James Hawkridge

Jinkx Monsoon and Major Scales: Unwrapped

has returned to London for the second year in a row at the Soho Theatre.

Get ready to have your cheeks ache for a full hour and a half, because from the moment the RuPaul’s Drag Race winner opens her overdrawn mouth until she sings her last note, this is a laugh-fest from start to finish. The show makes fun of all those festive customs, traditions and songs (yes Mariah, Jinkx is reading you too) typical of the Christmas season. Or as Jinkx likes to say, “THE Season!”.

Unwrapped is a combination of comedy and ’50s jazz-like songs – some of which can be found in the drag star’s Christmas albums Christmas Queens and Christmas Queens 2 that only Jinkx Monsoon could pull off in such a brilliant way. From Trump to Caitlin Jenner and Brexit to Santa Claus, nothing and no one are left outside her comedy range. The drag tradition of turning pop culture into comedy is brought to a complete other comic level. And what comedy!

The basement of the Soho Theatre is the perfect location for a show of this nature; allowing the best stage-audience connection. Audience participation is vital to any show of this nature and Jinkx and Major know it, pulling it off in effortless and entertainment fashion. Audience feedback, encouragement and participation is at the show’s heart, making it not only hilarious but warmly relatable. Don’t miss out on this raucous evening of entertainment in the run-up to Christmas.

Jinkx Monsoon and Major Scales: Unwrapped is at London’s Soho Theatre from 21 November – 10 December. For tickets head to sohotheatre.com.
