Hollyoaks has been praised after doctor Mitchell Deveraux (Imran Adams) comes out as gay to his mum.

For weeks, fans of the hit Channel 4 soap have seen Mitchell come to terms with his sexuality as he started dating drag queen Scott Drinkwell (Ross Adams).

The start of their relationship was the beginning of an ongoing sexual fluidity storyline and it was after a recent tragedy that we saw Mitchell coming to terms with his sexuality and dealing with the reaction of his conservative family to his new relationship.

And during last night’s episode – which saw the shock death of fan favourite Jesse Donovan (Luke Jerdy) – we saw Mitchell confide in his mother about his sexuality.

He told his mum: “I didn’t want to start having feelings for Scott but I couldn’t stop. I didn’t want to bring shame on our family.”

But Martine replied: “I couldn’t be prouder.”

Fans then took to social media to praise the soap and Imran for his performance with one writing: “Mitchell mam accepts him for who he is not just sexuality ❤️🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈 #Hollyoaks”

Another wrote: “It’s 2020. We all deserve to be happy and things have changed since coming out. Loving these Mitchell and Martine scenes #Hollyoaks”

“#hollyoaks got me crying with mitchell AND jesse tonight damn,” another wrote on Twitter.

The episode left many in tears over the tragic death and the coming out scene, and one wrote: “I am proper quivering lip crying at Hollyoaks! 😭 Why would you kill off Jesse?! 🥺 Mitchell & his Mum had me in bits too! 😢 #Hollyoaks”
