Guardians of the Galaxy to feature an LGBT+ character?

By Ross Semple

Could there be an LGBT+ character coming to Guardians of the Galaxy? There already might be, if you believe the film’s director.

In an interview with the Press Association, the director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 James Gunn was asked about the possibility of including a gay character in the franchise.

“Absolutely. I would love to be able to,” Gunn said. “We might have already done that. I say watch the movie. Check it out. See what you think.”

Starring Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 comes to cinemas next week – with a host of extremely positive reviews already teasing the film as one of Marvel’s best.

There have recently been a number of LGBT+ characters in high-profile films. Beauty and the Beast became the first Disney film to feature an LGBT+ character. LeFou (Josh Gad), who serves as the sidekick to the film’s primary antagonist Gaston (Luke Evans), and features in a small but significant subplot of his own when it comes to his sexuality.

Power Rangers recently made history as the first film to feature an openly LGBT+ superhero. During the film, Yellow Ranger Trini Kwan – played by pop star Becky G – is seen struggling to accept that she’s attracted to other women.

At first she just assumes she’s having boyfriend troubles, but as the film progresses, she realises she’s actually having girlfriend troubles.

The film’s director, Dean Israelite, has opened up about the landmark storyline and said that he hopes it helps young fans of the series realise that being different is “OK”.

The content of Power Rangers led to the film receiving an 18+ certificate in Russia. The film was originally rated 16+ until it was criticised by Russian politician Vitaly Milonov, who is predominantly anti-LGBT, and given the 18+ rating without explanation.
