Frank Ocean to headline London’s Lovebox festival

By Will Stroude

Frank Ocean has been announced as a headline at next year’s Lovebox festival in east London.

The annual festival takes place from 14 to 15 July next year in London’s Victoria Park, with the R&B star’s set is being advertised as a London festival exclusive on the Lovebox website.

First release tickets have already gone on sale priced at £49.50 (plus booking fee) and are likely to sell out quick.

The announcement makes Lovebox the 29-year-old’s first confirmed UK gig since the release of his critically acclaimed 2016 album, Blonde, which saw him win Artist of the Year at this year’s Attitude Awards.

Frank shot to stardom with the release of Channel Orange in 2012. Around the same time, he penned a heartfelt note on Tumblr, opening up about his first true (and unrequited) love for another man.

While Ocean has remained relatively tight-lipped about his private life, he has offered glimpses into his romantic life and his connection to the LGBT+ community through occasional posts on his Tumblr page, including one letter of solidarity in the wake of the Orlando attacks, in which he wrote, “many hate us and wish we didn’t exist”.

Ocean included an original poem entitled Boyfriend as part of a limited-edition magazine called Boys Don’t Cry which was released alongside recently-released second album Blond. In it, he gushed:

my boyfriend he misses me when I’m gone
so he don’t forget me
there’s a song he sings
calms his nerve, endings
my boyfriend is friendly
and we don’t want no problems

The singer also revealed that dating had become more “normal” since he hit the spotlight and came out, explaining in a recent interview that: “There’s no, like, shame or self-loathing. There’s no, you know, crisis.”

Lovebox festival has a reputation for showcasing LGBT+ artists, including Patrick Wolf, The Gossip and Goldfrapp. For tickets click here.
