Netflix’s Swedish teen drama Young Royals is returning very soon and a brand new clip hints at what to expect from the much-anticipated second season.

Netflix teased the new season by sharing the first four minutes of episode one online, with the footage hinting that the second season will follow Prince Wilhelm (Edvin Ryding) dealing with his secret gay relationship after a sex tape was made public.

A very different exploration of royalty to The Crown, Young Royals follows the young Swedish Prince Wilhelm as he adjusts to his prestigious new boarding school while coming to terms with his royal duties, sexuality, and feelings for classmate Simon (Omar Rudberg).

The show’s first season premiered in July 2021 and garnered a dedicated fanbase and a Rotten Tomatoes audience score of 99 percent

The latest footage of season two shows a distraught Wilhelm grieving both his brother and his relationship when he awakens from a rather steamy dream about Simon. While fans are still speculating on what drama season two will contain, Netflix has provided a brief synopsis.

“Simon tries to move on and find his own way. August struggles with a guilty conscience and wants to be forgiven. Felice finally stands up for herself, while Sara is torn between old loyalties and new friends,” the show’s summary reads.

It continues: “When Wilhelm tries to take revenge on August and win back Simon’s trust, he creates new problems for the royal house that threaten to shake the entire state.”

Drama incoming!!

Many fans are delighted the show is returning and have shared their excitement online.

One fan tweeted: “im proud of being a balanced gay. watch young royals and go through hell emotionally then watch heartstopper kicking my feet and twirling my hair”

“they say there are five stages of grief… denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. well i’d like to add one more… revenge,” another fan shared, hoping that Wilhelm is able to live life on his own terms and ensure justice is served.

Others shared that they are disappointed that Netflix has renewed LGBTQ+ shows centred on predominantly white men but has axed shows like First Kill that offer under-explored queer perspectives.

“just seeing that young royals and heartstopper got renovated for more seasons but first kill got cancelled makes me feel sick like netflix only gives us representation if it’s white and male i’m tired,” someone wrote.

A fan also noted “young royals never misses” in breaking down the contents of the short clip Netflix released.

Young Royals will be available to stream on Netflix from 1 November.

The Attitude September/October issue is out now.
