Emma Thompson is set to return to the London stage for the first time in 25 years.

The Oscar-winning actress will star in a revival of Stephen Sondheim’s musical Sweeney Todd at the London Coliseum in March and April next year.

Thompson, 55, will play Mrs Lovett aka “Nellie” in the upcoming production. Thompson previously played the role in four Sweeney Todd shows at the Lincoln Centre in New York in March.

The actress hasn’t appeared on the London stage since starring in a 1989 production of Look Back in Anger directed by iconic British actress Judi Dench.

Earlier this year she was nominated for a BAFTA and a Golden Globe for her performance as Mary Poppins author PL Travers in the hit film Saving Mr Banks.
