Ellen DeGeneres breaks record by winning 20th People’s Choice award

By Samuel McManus

Ellen DeGeneres has become the most popular celebrity in the People’s Choice Awards’ 43-year history.

Awards or not, we could have told you that.

DeGeneres won three awards last night (18 January): for Favourite Daytime TV host, Favourite Comedic Collaboration and Favourite Animated-Movie Voice (Finding Dory).

Justin Timberlake made the presentation while a parade of smartly dressed men came on stage, holding all 20 of her awards. Timberlake won an award himself, for Favourite Male Artist.

Before walking on stage, DeGeneres gave wife Portia de Rossi a quick kiss then delivered a witty speech.

“This is amazing. Seventeen, I get. Eighteen, sure. Nineteen, I can see that. But 20 is outrageous,” she said.

After receiving the award, DeGeneres took to Twitter to thank her fans, saying: “The reason I get to do what I do is because you watch it, like it, vote for it and retweet it. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

Britney Spears also took to Twitter to congratulate her and share the video for which they received the best comedy duo award.
