Direct from its sell out run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, following it’s sold out previews at the Theatre 503, Free & Proud transfers to the King’s Head Theatre, London, for a strictly limited run.

Free & Proud is an exploration of a modern marriage, told through the story of an unlikely couple. On one hand, there’s Hakeem, a driven and loyal immigrant who’s worked hard to build his career as a scientist.

On the other, his husband, Jeremy, is a white, privileged American who’s lazy, unfaithful and wracked with guilt.

The play lays bare the dynamics of a messy relationship and how it can take a disaster to make sense of things. Faaiz Mbelizi and Michael Gilbert star.

Written by award-winning New York playwright Charles Gershman and directed by Peter Darney (5 Guys Chillin’), Free & Proud will be at the King’s Head Theatre, London, August 28-September 1.

It transfers from the Edinburgh Fringe, where it was named a top pick by The Skinny, Attitude, and ScotsGay. It is published by Oberon Books.

“Living in New York I see a dichotomy where a class of privileged white people can be so tragically unable to relate to the plight of society’s less privileged,” Gershman says. “I wanted to write a play that explored a relationship where these two different experiences collide.”

Gershman’s play The Waiting Game premiered in the 2017 Edinburgh Fringe, where it won the Best Overseas Play Award (Derek Awards). Darney wrote and directed the multi award-winning 5 Guys Chillin’ (The King’s Head Theatre, SoHo Playhouse (Off-Broadway), The Players Theatre (Dublin) and 2 Edinburgh festivals).
