He shot to fame on It’s A Sin earlier this year – and Callum Scott Howells’ upcoming project looks set to be equally high-profile.

“I’m on my last week of filming for a movie called The Beautiful Game,” the actor told us on the red carpet at last week’s Virgin Atlantic Attitude Awards, powered by Jaguar. “It’s a Netflix film coming out next summer.”

“It’s all about the Homeless World Cup,” added Callum of the film, which will co-star Bill Nighy and Top Boy‘s Micheal Ward. “It’s about an England team who compete in the Homeless World Cup in Rome.”

And is his character LGBTQ? “You’ll have to tune in and watch…” the rising star teased.

Colin, Callum’s It’s A Sin character, proved a fan favourite when the show dropped at the start of the year. If there was a second series, he joked, Colin could “come back and haunt everyone!”

While creator Russell T Davies himself told Attitude a second series is not happening (“there’s no work being done on that – it ended”) Callum would at least be up for watching it.

“Absolutely, 100%, ” he opined. “Russell made fully-fledged characters that people fell in love with, who I fell in love with. I think anything that involves Russell’s writing and these characters happening again… I’d be watching as a fan, for sure.”

Callum also revealed that he was friends with one of the men of the evening, and fellow Welshie, H from Steps, whose band won the Attitude Icon Award, supported by Virgin Atlantic.

“I know H very well – we went to the same school!” the 22-year-old, from the Rhondda, told us. (Obviously, at wildly different times – H is 45, and ‘5,6,7,8’ came out two years before Callum was born!)

“We’re different ages but from the same place,” Callum added. “But don’t tell him that – as far as he’s concerned we were there the same year, the same time!”
