Brits 2016: Adele stands with Kesha as she takes home record-equalling four awards

By Troy Nankervis

Last night’s BRIT awards belonged to Adele, who took home four gongs for Best British Female Solo Artist, Best British Single for ‘Hello’, the British Album of the Year for 25, and the Global Success award.

Her haul of four awards equals Blur’s record for most Brits in one year. The Brit-pop band won four awards in 1995 for their album Parklife.

Taking to the stage to collect Best British Female Solo Artist, Adele used her speech to publicly throw her support being Kesha in the fallout of her court proceedings this week.

“To come back after so long away and be so warmly received is lovely, thank you so much”, the 27-year-old said.

“To all the other girls who were nominated, thank you for letting me be in your company, you’re all amazing, you’re all incredible and it’s a privilege to be beside you. I’d like to take a quick second to thank my management and record label for embracing the fact that I’m a woman and being encouraged by it,” said Adele.

“And I would like to take this moment to publicly support Kesha.”

With both artists currently signed to music giant Sony, Adele is currently their most successful artist having sold some 18 milliom copies of 25 since its release last November.

Meanwhile, Kesha was this week denied attempts to break her contract with Sony by a New York Supreme Court Justice, despite claims of sexual assault from producer Dr. Luke, who denied the allegations.

Adele now joins Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, Lorde and Fiona Apple in expressing their support for Kesha, who is still contracted to produce six studio albums with Sony.

Posthumously honoured with a Brit Musical Icon Award, the late David Bowie was also remembered in a tribute by New Zealand singer Lorde, who performed ‘Spiders from Mars’ alongside Bowie’s long time band.

Annie Lennox and Gary Oldman spoke of his passing, and his enormous contribution to the music industry. “It’s almost impossible to mention Bowie’s name in the past tense,” said Lennox.

“Everything he represented as an artist is, and always will be vital and incredibly present,” said Lennox.

“As a cutting edge artistic genius he continues to live on through his music. David Bowie is deeply embedded in the heart of British culture, as a fixture within our collective inner psyche.”

Actor Gary Oldman and long-time friend of Bowie accepted a posthumous Brit Icon Award on his behalf to a standing ovation.

“David faced his illness with enormous dignity and grace and customary humour,” he said.

“Even in dire circumstances when he wrote to tell me the bad news he had cancer, he added: ‘The good news is that I’ve got my cheekbones back’.”
