The nominees for the 2022 BRIT Awards were announced on Saturday (18 December) and see LGBTQ artists and allies such as Lil Nas X, Self Esteem, and Little Mix all up for big gongs.

For the first time in the Awards’ history, categories will be gender-neutral meaning Adele and Ed Sheeran are battling it out to be named Artist of the Year, while ‘Montero (Call Me By Your Name)’ singer Lil Nas X is up against the likes of Doja Cat and Olivia Rodrigo in International Artist of the Year (and ‘Montero’ is up for International Song of the Year)

In November the Awards organisers announced that they’d go gender-neutral after calls to be more inclusive of non-binary artists such as Sam Smith, who had missed out on nominations last year.

“What a laugh”

The Artist of the Year category includes Adele, Ed Sheeran, Dave, Sam Fender, and Little Simz. The International Artist category features Lil Nas X, Olivia Rodrigo, Doja Cat, Taylor Swift, and Billie Eilish.

Dua Lipa is up for Best Pop/R&B Act alongside Adele, Ed Sheeran, Griff, and Joy Crookes. Little Mix are included in the Best Group category.

Attitude cover star, Self Esteem, who also won the Music Award at the 2021 Virgin Atlantic Attitude Awards in October, is named in the list of nominees for Best New Artist. She faces Central Cee, Griff, Joy Crookes, and Little Simz.

Celebrating her nomination on Instagram on Sunday (19 December) Self Esteem said: “This one’s for baby Becky who obsessively wished she could go to brit school and was REALLY livid she couldn’t.

“I am so f*****g giddy about this. What a laugh. Also props to @brits for having 35 year old woman representation. We don’t just become obsolete! We’re still fit and make good records!!!”

In another post Self Esteem featured her bronze BRIT ‘B’ alongside her Attitude Award and a few other awards adding: “So many options of what to whack burglars round the head with now!”
