Beyonce and Adele lead this year’s VMA nominations

MTV announced the nominees for this year’s Video Music Awards yesterday (July 26).
Thanks to her latest visual album, Lemonade, Beyoncé is leading the pack with a whopping 11 nominations. Smash hit Formation is up for “Video of the Year” and “Best Pop Video”, while the album itself, which debuted on HBO back in February, is up for a gong in the new “Breakthrough Long Form Video” category.
Adele has racked up an impressive seven nominations, including “Video of the Year” for her comeback single, “Hello”.
Drake and Justin Bieber will be fighting for the Video of the Year gong too, as well as Kanye West’s now infamous video for “Famous“.
This year’s annual pre-VMA drama was brought to us by the “Famous” video, which used a nude wax work of Taylor Swift. It all kicked off when Swift complained that she had not approved the lyrics in the song (“I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex/Why? I made that bitch famous”). Entrepreneur and Kanye’s wife, Kim Kardashian then leaked a video recording that appeared to prove that Taylor had in fact given her blessing to the song.
Swift received no nominations at this years awards, however Calvin Harris’ “This Is What You Came For”, which it was revealed was co-written by Swift, has been nominated for “Best Male Video” and “Best Collaboration”.
Will Bey slay the VMAs, or will the rest of the pack snatch the awards for themselves? Will all the recent celebrity drama spill into the live show, or will the stars have buried the hatchet? Who knows, but we can’t wait to find out.
The VMAs kick off on August 28.
