Bette Midler: ‘I almost turned down Wind Beneath My Wings’

Bette Midler has admitted that she almost turned down the opportunity to record her iconic hit Wind Beneath My Wings.

The singer recorded a version of the Gary Morris song to be included on the soundtrack of her film Beaches, which she starred in alongside Barbara Hershey.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain, Midler said: “I thought it was a country song and I thought people would be angry at me for covering a country song.

“Both of my producers said at the time, ‘If you don’t sing this song, we’re going to kill you!’ The point of it is, the movie [Beaches] and the quality of that picture, the way it resonated with people had a lot to do with the success of the song I think.”

Midler recently visited the UK to promote her new album It’s The Girls!, which features covers of songs recorded by the world’s most famous girl groups.

She recently confirmed that she will return to the UK next summer for her first tour in 35 years – read more here.
