100,000 sign petition calling for ‘My Husband’s Not Gay’ to be cancelled

A petition calling for TLC’s one-off documentary My Husband’s Not Gay to be cancelled has been signed by almost 100,000 people.
The show – which will air in the US in January – will follow four devout Mormon men living in Utah who don’t identify as homosexual despite their same-sex attraction. Find out more here.
Viewers will watch married couples Jeff and Tanya, Pret and Megan, Curtis and Tera and 35 year-old bachelor Tom, as they each try to make make their relationships with women work despite their feelings towards other men.
The creator of the petition, Josh Sanders, argues that the show “promotes the false and dangerous idea” that gay people can choose to be straight.
“I started this petition because these men deserve compassion and acceptance,” he told Huffington Post. “Identifying himself as a Christian once subjected to ex-gay therapy. Instead, TLC is presenting their lives as entertainment, and sending the dangerous message that being gay is something that can and ought to be changed.”
In response to the criticism, TLC have issued a statement to Variety saying that the individuals in the show “speak for themselves,” not the network.
“TLC has long shared compelling stories about real people and different ways of life, without judgment. The individuals featured in this one-hour special reveal the decisions they have made, and speak only for themselves.”
