Emma Corrin has opened up about her journey with her gender identity and says that “visibility is key”

The 25-year-old actress began posting about being a member of the LGBTQ community earlier this year, first posting an image on Instagram with the caption “ur fave queer bride”, followed more recently by images of her using binders.

The actress came to fame playing the role of Princess Diana in the Netflix drama The Crown, for which she won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress, and has been nominated for an Emmy Award.

“My journey has been a long one”

Speaking to ITV News to mark her latest theatrical venture, Anna X, Corrin, who uses she/they pronouns, was asked about opening up on social media about her identity. She says: “I think visibility is key with these things.

“My journey has been a long one and has still got a way to go. I think that we are so used to defining ourselves and that’s the way sadly society works is within these binaries and it’s taken me a long time to realise that I exist somewhere in between and I’m still not sure where that is yet.”

On when they started to post about their identity, they say they weren’t sure if it was the right thing to do at first, but that they’d had very positive feedback from people in the queer community.

They also say they are still figuring things out and that “it’s going to be an ongoing journey, but I hope that sharing it helps people”

Emma added that with the play, Anna X, playing Salford Quays, it means staying in Manchester and being around a vibrant LGBTQ scene: “I walked from the station to where we’re staying through Canal Street and it’s an amazing feeling of solidarity… Yeah, it’s a beautiful feeling to be amongst that kind of thing.”

The Crown actress first hinted at being a part of the Queer community in April with an Instagram post of her dressed in a bridal gown with the caption: “ur fave queer bride”. Then in July, she posted stunning shots from a photoshoot where she tried a makeshift binder whilst talking about buying her first proper binder. She also updated her pronouns on the platform to she/they.
