LC:M Interview with designer Oliver Spencer

By Joseph Kocharian

Oliver Spencer always puts on a show, last season we were at the carnival for his show, and for Autumn Winter we were treated to a folk/gypsy band too cheer up even the weariest Fashion week traveller. We spoke to the eponymous leader of the label to chat about the new collection, inspirations and getting notable men (this time, friend of Attitude Magazine, Natt Weller) to tread the catwalk for him.

Last season you brought Brasil carnival to us for Spring Summer, where are we going for Autumn Winter? The inspiration for AW15 is the work of British artist and sculptor David Nash. He does amazing things with the natural environment – trees, bark, sand and so on. This is then translated into the textures and shapes for the new collection.

What are the key colours, styles and pieces to the collection? It’s actually texture that’s really important to this collection. Soft and rich fabrics including alpaca, recycled cashmere and super fine lambswool. The colours are influenced by the natural environment. Lots of charcoals and heavy greys with creams to imitate the effect of charred wood. There are also some accent brights and floral prints.

You often have an editor and a notable face walking in the show- what’s the concept behind that? I like to draw people from all walks of life, including editors, musicians and so on.

Who is the ‘Oliver Spencer man’ this season? The collection is significantly more mature. He’s a very considered man this season. He’s very clean and sharp.

Do you have a personal favourite look from the AW line up? If so, why? My favourite pieces is the double breasted alpaca coat for the depth and richness of texture.

What piece from the collection the OS man’s favourite? The double-breasted alpaca coat.

Where would the Oliver Spencer man take you on a date? The River Cafe, London

Who is the Oliver Spencer Man’s style hero? I’m not sure that he has just one style hero. He takes inspiration from lots of different people.

Who is his favourite musician? Probably someone like Damon Albarn.

What would he do with his free time? He’s into lots of different things. He’s into the arts scene, culture scene, music scene, film scene…
