Thinking of changing your hair colour? Here’s what you need to know

Attitude Hair and Grooming expert Jason Collier shares his advice.

There’s something about this time of year that makes me want to embrace new styles and colours. What better way to start the new season than with a new look?

Changing your hair colour, in particular, can give you an instant lift and make sure you’re right on trend.

Whether you fancy trying out a daring new hue, or just want to update your current shade, here are some of the best ways to embrace colour trends this spring.

Statement Ice-White Blonde

Forget platinum blonde, this year it’s all about the ice blonde. This fresh take on a classic hair colour makes use of icy, steely tones to create an ultra-modern look.

Mixing in silver and even purple can create an incredible iridescent effect, which can be made stronger or more subtle depending on your preference.

Even if you’re already blonde, going ice-white can be a big job so make sure you get the help of a professional to keep things looking perfect.

Neon Hues

Brightly coloured hair is becoming more and more mainstream, and 2018 is going to be a huge year for bold, neon shades.

To keep things modern, choose a buzzcut or cropped hairstyle and brighten it up with purple, green, pink or orange hues.

This is a daring, eccentric look so it isn’t for everyone, but pairing acid colours with a very short haircut can make them look punchy and interesting without being too overpowering.

Sun-Streaked Tips

If going a completely new colour isn’t for you, opt for a more understated style which is reminiscent of natural sun-steaked highlights.

This style works well no matter what your base hair colour is. Opt for highlight colours which are just one or two shades lighter than your hair colour, and work them in carefully towards the tips of the hair.

If done well, hair will look radiant and multi-dimensional – just make sure to avoid the dated “frosted tips” look!

Be Realistic

Changing your hair colour can be a big undertaking. Going from dark brunette to light blonde can be tricky, but it’s not impossible. Be realistic with your expectations and discuss with your colourist what shade you can achieve without causing too much damage to your hair.

Going from dark to light can be a long process which requires a lot of work and maintenance to get the right look. Find out what could work for you and do it gradually, rather than going from raven-haired to ice-white blonde overnight.

Caring for Dyed Hair

To keep your colour looking bright and fresh, wash your hair less often and steer completely clear of any clarifying shampoos, which will strip the colour. Instead, use a gentle cleansing shampoo every other wash, and for the washes in-between, use a shampoo suited to your hair colour.

For example, blondes should use a toning shampoo to reduce brassiness and minimise yellow tones. Dying – especially bleaching – can damage hair, so be sure to use a deep-conditioning mask – I really like SheaMoisture Deep Treatment Masque, which is an intensive treatment for damaged hair – once a week and a colour-specific conditioner to keep hair nourished.
