Transgender woman petitions Pakistan's High Court for better treatment of trans community

Waqar Ali has petitioned the Lahore High Court for better treatment of members of the transgender community with the help of trans advocate Sheraz Zaka, according to the Express Tribune.

The petition calls on Pakistan to provide better protection for the transgender community following the recent rise in attacks and abuse and states that the transgender community should be allowed to mention their gender on national identity cards.

The petition revealed that being part of the transgender community led to less respect in society and the two demanded that the court would help the federal government create legislature on the welfare of those in the trans community.

They said the transgender community had been socially isolated but, as human beings, they deserve respect, honour and opportunities to excel in life within their country.

Ali and Zaka took on the Supreme Court by stating that fundamental human rights were at stake and that the court has the power to correct this and make life for trans individuals easier.

Violence against the transgender community in Pakistan is at an all time high and health officials were found guilty of committing criminal negligence after a transgender activist died.
