Tom Daley’s mum opens up about Tom and Dustin’s engagement

By Will Stroude

As we celebrate (and mourn – there go our chances with either of ’em) the news that Olympic diver Tom Daley and Oscar-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black are getting hitched, Tom’s mum is already teasing when the couple plan to tie the knot.

Debbie Daley told The Plymouth Herald that she’s known about the pair’s engagement for a few days, and is “very, very happy” for her son and future son-in-law – who she describes as a “very likeable person that gets along with everybody”.

The couple – who’ve been together for over two years – made a low-key engagement announcement in the Births, Deaths and Marriages section of The Times newspaper this morning (October 1), but Debbie says they’re not in a rush to head down the aisle.

“The whole family is extremely excited and looking forward to the big day,” she said. “They are going to wait until after the Olympic Games in Rio before they decide on the date of the wedding and where they want to marry.”

She continued: “At the moment he is training in Stratford and focusing on competitions to prepare for Rio at the start of August. Training has always come first for him.

“Once Rio is out of the way, they will properly plan the wedding.”

Excellent, plenty of time for us to browse for a new hat then.

Daley, 21, first alluded to his relationship with Black, 41, back in December 2013 in a YouTube video in which he also spoke about his sexuality for the first time.

Since then, the pair have been a public and mutually supportive couple, engaging in charity activities together, sharing adorable holiday snaps with fans and marking anniversaries on social media.

Celebrating their two-year anniversary in March this year, the couple shared messages for each other on their social media accounts.

Daley wrote: “2 years ago I met my [love] and my life changed forever! Thank you for making these past 2 years so special.”

In response, Milk writer Black said: “Two years ago we took a selfie just after meeting…the very moment my life changed forever. Happy Anniversary my love.”
