Tom Daley responds to surrogacy critics: ‘I don’t care what anyone says’
The 23-year-old diver also explained how his impending fatherhood has already changed him
Tom Daley has hit back at critics of his decision to have a child with husband Dustin Lance Black via surrogate.
The Olympic diver announced he was having a baby with his screenwriter husband via surrogate earlier this year, and the couple have sadly been forced to defend themselves from bigoted criticism about their decision to become fathers ever since.
Speaking to The Times this week, the 23-year-old opened up about his impending fatherhood and what he thinks about people criticising his decision to have a baby via surrogate.
He said: “We have an egg donor and a surrogate and we feel very lucky. I am able to live my life without worrying what people think. People say whatever they say. I get tons [of abuse] every day, but at the end of the day, I’m married with a kid on the way and I don’t care what anyone says.”
He continued: “I don’t care if they don’t like it. It took me a long time to get to that place but I am here. I think, ‘Whatever.'”
Although there’s still several months before the baby’s due date, Daley feels fatherhood has already changed his life.
He said: “It has changed me. Even flying out on the plane I am normally fine with turbulence and just fall asleep, but now I’m thinking, It’s not just me.’
“Holy crap, I have to worry about looking after a human being and being in charge of making sure they survive and thrive. Diving is no longer my number one [concern[. My child is number one and diving is number two and, for me, that order might help.
“All of a sudden coming to training is no longer my crazy, chaotic time; it’s quiet time without a screaming, pooping child.”
Last month, Dustin Lance Black hit back at a radio caller who thought two men “shouldn’t raise a child”.
