Tom Daley for US Gay and Lesbian Sports Hall of Fame
By Josh Haggis
Tom Daley and Gareth Thomas are to be inducted into the US National Gay and Lesbian Sports Hall of Fame.
The US National Gay and Lesbian Sports Hall of Fame was founded last year, when it honoured the likes of retired rugby player/LGBT supporter Ben Cohen and lesbian tennis champion Martina Naratilova.
The Hall of Fame aims to “recognise both individuals and organisations whose achievements and efforts have enhanced sports and athletics for the LGBT community”.
This year, those recognised include Team GB diver Daley, who revealed late last year that he is in a relationship with a man, and out gay former rugby player Thomas. They will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at a ceremony in Chicago today (July 11).
“We could not have been happier for the success of last year’s events,” said organiser Bill Gubrud. “The positive feedback we have received has been overwhelming. My favorite part is having the chance to meet the National Gay and Lesbian Sports Hall of Fame (NGLSHOF) inductees. They are an amazing group of people with so much history and stories to share.”
Meanwhile, former Attitude cover star Gareth Thomas recently backed an international study into homophobia in sports – click here for the full story.
Tom Daley shared a message to mark Pride in London last month (June) and you can watch it here.
