Plans to redevelop and build flats on the UK’s last remaining strict leather and rubber fetish gay club in London have been blocked.

A proposed 46-flat development on Mile End Road, in London, have been blocked after Tower Hamlets’ councillors ruled the Backstreet bar – the last ‘true gay fetish club’ – was an ‘important community asset’, the Guardian reported.

Cllr Rachel Blake said: “It is the last true gay fetish club, and diversity matters to us.

“This kind of venue really matters to us, it matters to Tower Hamlets and to the whole of London.

“It is very important to have safe spaces for the whole community.”

The Backstreet bar, in Mile End Road, has been open to the public for 34 years.
