Team GB’s Kate Richardson-Walsh nominated for BBC Sports Personality of the Year
Kate Richardson-Walsh has been nominated for the coveted BBC Sport Personality of the Year Award 2016.
The Team GB star captained the women’s hockey team as they took home gold at the Rio Olympics this summer. Competing alongside wife and teammate Helen, the pair became the first same-sex couple in history to win Olympic gold medals.
The athletes have been playing together for more than 20 years and been a couple for eight of those. The married in 2013, little more than a year after winning bronze at the London 2012 Games.
Kate and Helen were up two of the almost 50 openly LGBT athletes who competed at the Rio Olympic Games, with Team GB proudly boasting the highest number of all competing nations, with eight – all of whom were named recipients of Attitude’s Active Award 2016 last month.
Another of the athletes was gold-medal-winning boxer Nicola Adams, who has also received a BBC Sports Personality of the Year award nomination this year.
The 34-year-old double Olympic gold medal winner became the first woman to win an Olympic boxing title at London 2012 in the women’s flyweight division, and successfully defended her title in Rio.
Nicola will go head-head with Kate and 14 other nominees when the awards ceremony takes place in Birmingham on Sunday, 18 December. The public will vote for their favourite by phone and online during the live show.
