Strong support for equal marriage in Ireland says new figures
By Sam Rigby
There is strong support for equal marriage in Ireland ahead of next year’s referendum, according to new statistics.
76% of Irish people said that they would welcome the introduction of same-sex marriage in 2015, while 80% voted in favour of equal rights for same-sex parent families.
However, almost half of those surveyed still expressed some concern over same-sex marriage, with 49% saying they had reservations. In comparison, 41% said that they had reservations over gay couples adopting children.
19% said that they would vote against same-sex marriage, while 59% said that opposing same-sex marriage does not necessarily mean that individuals are homophobic.
RTÉ Prime Time and The Sunday Business Post sampled 1,000 people earlier this month for the survey.
