Straight footballer Koke said if he was gay he wouldn’t have problems coming out

The Atletico Madrid midfielder hit headlines after he called Ronaldo a f****t during a match

Straight Atletico Madrid midfielder Koke said he wouldn’t have any problems coming out as gay, if he was.

Last year, Antoine Griezmann suggested that fear is the main reason that there is a lack of gay footballers in the industry, and in a recent interview with Icon, Koke echoed the comments.

He said: “Perhaps nobody has come out because there aren’t any gay players, or because they don’t feel brave enough to come out due to what people will say.

“I think that people have more and more respect for homosexuality and equality in society. A footballer being homosexual shouldn’t have any influence when it comes to taking to the pitch.”

Although being an LGBT-ally, the midfielder said he wouldn’t have a problem coming out if he was gay.

“To be honest, I don’t know,” he added. “I would have to be in that situation and as I’m not, I can’t say.

“But in principle, no. You are who you are and you have to accept yourself for that. I wouldn’t have a problem coming out as gay, I think.”

The 26-year-old hit headlines after he called Cristiano Ronaldo a “f****t” during a match against Real Madrid and Koke said “these things happen on the pitch”.

He said: “Well, these are thing that happen on the pitch and stay on the pitch.

“I never usually talk about what happens on the pitch, not about what people say to me nor what I say.

“You say a lot of things without thinking on the pitch.”
