Speaking at the Television Critics Association last Friday (January 5) about his upcoming show Pose, Murphy revealed one of the show’s characters’ coming out experience mirrors his own, Deadline reports.

According to Murphy, one of the scenes in the show features a character’s father finding out he’s gay before beating him “bloody with a belt”.

“If you asked me then if I would be allowed to be married and have children like you, I never would have believed it.”

Pose, set in 1980s New York, is loosely based on the cult classic film Paris Is Burning and will look at the rise of drag ball culture. The set to make TV history by featuring the largest cast of transgender actors ever.

Murphy went on to described himself as a survivor, saying he feels a responsibility to give back and support people who “still don’t feel included.”

“Now is the time to tell this story, about this group of people who, sadly are more and more disenfranchised and cut off,” he said.

“We want to celebrate them… The timing of this show is very important.”

Meanwhile, Murphy has teased what fans can expect from the upcoming eighth season of American Horror Story.

Pose is set to air on FX this summer.
