Couples wishing to marry on the day that same-sex marriage becomes legal can now register to do so.

Registration for the first same-sex marriages in England and Wales on March 29 opened this morning (March 13), BBC News reports.

Meanwhile, existing same-sex marriages, which took place out of the UK, will be officially recognised from today.

The process for civil partnerships to be upgraded to marriages has yet to be announced by the government.

Earlier this year, Scotland passed a bill legalising same-sex marriage, but the new law will come into play later than in England and Wales. Northern Ireland has yet to agree to gay marriage.

Attitude is to publish its first-ever “bookazine” to celebrate the first same-sex marriages taking place in England and Wales.

The 148-page glossy guide will be available exclusively in print at WHSmith from March 25, and will also be available to download via Attitude’s digital app for tablet and mobile.
