Oprah’s network to make Michael Sam reality series

Oprah Winfrey’s US cable network, OWN, has commissioned a reality series starring Michael Sam.

The multi-part series will follow the out gay American football player as he begins his foray into the world of professional sport and fights to earn his spot on the St. Louis Rams NFL (National Football League) team, reports Deadline.

Sam, 24, came out in February, and after he was selected by the St Louis Rams over the weekend (May 11), he will become only the second out gay athlete to compete in any of North America’s four major professional sports leagues – football, baseball, basketball and hockey – after basketball player Jason Collins was selected for the NBA earlier this year.

“We are honoured that Michael is trusting us with his private journey in this moment that has not only made history but will shape it forever,” said Oprah Winfrey, discussing the yet-to-be titled show.

“Like every player out there working to make a team right now, my focus is on playing football to the very best of my ability,” added Sam.

He continued: “I am determined. And if seeing my story helps somebody else accept who they are and to go for their dreams too, that’s great. I am thankful to Oprah for her support and excited to work together.”
