One of the smallest countries in the world has decriminalized gay sex

Last week came with it the happy news

that the Seychelles have voted to decriminalize gay sex – and now Nauru, one of the smallest countries in the world, has followed suit.

According to Gay Star News, the island of 9,000 people that is located just north of Australia have updated their 117 year-old law outlawing gay sex.

The law was previously able to prosecute homosexuality and people could have been jailed for up to 14 years.

Others laws were changed and they include the decriminalizing of suicide, outlawing slavery and forced child labour as well as extending the definition of rape to include married couples.

It has also removed the death penalty and increased the penalties for pedophilia. Abortions in the country however, are still illegal.

Homosexuality in Nauru is now allowed but there are no anti-discrimination laws or any kind of recognition towards civil unions as well any law that would allow transgender people to change their gender.
