Linda Perry criticises Lady Gaga Oscar nomination, claims she only wrote one line of song

By Ben Kelly

Singer-songwriter Linda Perry has taken to Twitter to claim Lady Gaga doesn’t deserve her Oscar nomination for ‘Best Original Song’, claiming that the ‘Born This Way’ singer only altered one lyric in the song.

Gaga has been nominated alongside her co-writer Diane Warren for the song ‘Till It Happens To You’, a haunting ballad sung from the perspective of a rape survivor which featured in sexual assault documentary The Hunting Ground.

Former 4 Non Blondes member Perry, who has herself enjoyed songwriting success with Pink, Christina Aguilera and Gwen Stefani, claimed on Twitter last night (January 17) that she has Warren’s original demo for the song, and that only differs from the finished version, on which Gaga is credited as a co-writer.

Despite opining that Gaga’s ensuing accolades are undeserved, she maintains her revelation is not an attack on either of her peers, but rather an insight into the necessities of promoting a song, and guaranteeing commercial success.

Needless to say, many Little Monsters took great offence at Perry’s words, leading Perry to ultimately comment that “you can’t win on Twitter.”

‘Til It Happens to You’ is Diane Warren’s eighth Oscar nomination for ‘Best Original Song’, which she has never yet won, despite that list including iconic movie songs like ‘Because You Loved Me’ (Celine Dion), How Do I Live (LeAnn Rimes), and I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing (Aerosmith). This year, she and Gaga are nominated alongside Sam Smith, The Weeknd and Antony Hegarty.

This is Lady Gaga’s first Academy Award nomination, which comes hot on the heels if the 29-year-old’s Golden Globe win last week for her lead role as The Countess in American Horror Story: Hotel.

The 88th Academy Awards will take place on February 28 in Los Angeles.
