A lawmaker in Hong Kong has said there will be ‘huge consequences’ if they follow Taiwan’s footsteps and legalise same-sex marriage.
In a historic vote today (May 17), Taiwan became the first ever Asian state to legalise same-sex marriages and the new ruling has received worldwide praise and many are now calling for Hong Kong to follow in the same way.
However, Holden Chow – a former member of the Equal Opportunities Commission – urged the SAR government not to change the city’s stance on marriage.
Chow said: “I have received a lot of concerns from a lot of religious organisations and other organisations who insist on protecting traditional family values.
“In Hong Kong right now, the only legalised marriage is between one man and one woman and we hope that the government will take on board these sorts of opinions to maintain this legal principle.
“If we are going to change the legal status of marriage or try to legalise same-sex marriage, there will be huge consequences.”
