Las Vegas marks important marriage equality milestone

By Troy Nankervis

Las Vegas may be colloquially known from time to time as sin city but the Nevada neon metropolis has another reason to celebrate today.

Phoenix-based couple Ronald Bauman and Alexeev Dumitru have become the 5000th couple to receive a same-sex marriage license in Clark County since the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals deemed marriage equality to be legal last year, reports The Las Vegas Sun.

County Clerk Lynn Goya said it was a wonderful milestone to coincide with the start of the New Year.

“Las Vegas is the best place in the world to get married,” he said.

“We extend our happy congratulations to Ronald Bauman and Dumitru Alexeev on being the 5,000th same-sex couple to receive their marriage license in Clark County.”

As they reportedly plan to marry next Friday in Vegas, the couple have been offered a number of wedding gifts by the local business community, including a wedding package at the Luxor Wedding Chapel, hotel accommodation at Circus Circus Las Vegas and Mandalay Bay, tuxedo rental and tickets to Michael Jackson One and the High Roller Ferris Wheel.

The Marriage License Bureau started issuing licenses to same-sex couples on Oct. 9, 2014.
