Comedian Matt Matthews has sparked backlash after dismissing the use of pronouns during a recent podcast appearance.

Matthews, known for his stand-up comedy tours, appeared on Kandi Burruss’s Speak on It podcast last week, with the episode recently going viral for his controversial remarks.

During a conversation about the comic’s husband, Rob Killgore, Burruss asked: “Let’s talk about you and your boo. When did you meet them?”

Matt Matthews rejects using they/them pronouns

Matthews objected to Burruss using “them” to refer to his husband, responding: “Them? I only got one.” Burruss replied: “These days, I don’t know. I have to know the pronouns before I start talking.”

The comedian rejected the use of gender-neutral and non-binary pronouns, saying: “We ain’t got no damn pronouns up in here. I got a tallywacker, that’s a he. We don’t do all that shit,” before adding: “I ain’t doing all that they/them, LG… fuck all that.”

“You gay, you straight, you white, you Black, you a boy, you’re a girl. You got a coochie. You’re a girl. OK,” he added.

They/them can be used as a singular pronoun

The moment went viral, with viewers slamming Matthews for his insensitive comments amid a political climate in the US surrounding transgender identities.

One user wrote on X: “Hey @matt_mathews, instead of trying to be an annoying bitch ass pick me gay, how about you use your platform to bring our community together, girl. The MAGA cult is never gonna pick you just because you ‘don’t do no pronouns’.”

Another user penned: “Hate gays like this omg”, while others pointed out that “them” can be used as a singular pronoun. “We use it when we don’t know gender,” they continued.
