Goldie Hawn has apologised after posting a tweet describing anti-gay Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan as “wonderful”.

Hawn met Jonathan when they both attended the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland earlier this week.

Her Twitter followers quickly questioned her remarks, pointing out that the politician recently passed a law known as ‘Jail All The Gays’.

Under the new law, Nigerians face up to 14 years in prison for being gay, whether or not they have sex.

Anybody who knows a gay person, but doesn’t come forward to the authorities could also face a five year jail sentence.

The actress apologised for not being informed about the Nigerian President’s laws, responding to one fan: “I am deeply embarrassed. Had no idea of this and was not informed! Thank you. This is a horror story!”
