Glee star Naya Rivera is missing following a boat trip with her four-year-old son on a lake in Southern California.

Fears are growing for the actress’s safety and wellbeing after the toddler, Josey, was found alone in the vessel.

The 33-year-old rented the boat on Wednesday afternoon at Lake Piru, north-west of Los Angeles, the Venture County Sheriff’s Department says.

According to reports, Rivera had gone swimming with her son, who got back into the boat, but she did not.

Footage was shared on the VCSD’s Twitter account of the search operation in action “for a possible drowning victim.”

The same account later posted that the search – which deployed dive teams, helicopters and drones – would continue “at first light.”

On Tuesday, Rivera shared a touching picture on social media of her cuddling her son, with the caption: “Just the two of us.”

The TV favourite is best known for playing lesbian cheerleader Santana Lopez in the hit musical-comedy Glee, from 2009 to 2015.

She married fellow actor Ryan Dorsey – the father of her son – in 2014, but the couple divorced four years later and share joint custody of their child.
