Gay civil unions responsible for earthquakes, says Italian priest

By Fabio Crispim

An Italian priest has claimed that the recent earthquakes hitting Italy could be “divine punishments” for the passing of civil unions earlier this year, according to Gay Star News.

During an interview with Radio Maria, Father Giovanni Cavalcoli made the claims during an interview with Radio Maria. Cavalcoli said that the unions are an “offence to the family and the dignity of marriage.”

The Vatican has now criticised Cavalcoli for his comments, with Archbishop Angelo Becciu saying that his remarks were “offensive to believers and disgraceful for non-believers.”

Asking for forgiveness from victims, Becciu added that the idea of a vengeful God was “a pagan vision” dating from “the pre-Christian era.”

However Cavalcoli argued back, telling the Vatican to “read their catechism.”

Italy was hit by earthquakes in August and October which killed hundreds and left many more without homes.
