Egyptian Police using Grindr to catch gay men
The Egyptian police have been using gay dating apps such as Grindr to locate and catch LGBT people.
The Jerusalem Post reports that government authorities use the apps to pinpoint the location of users and then charge them with “inciting debauchery”.
In April, an Egyptian court sentenced 11 men accused of committing homosexual acts up to 12 years in jail and in 2014, Egyptian authorities detained 26 men during a raid on a Cairo bath house after receiving reports claiming that the men were holding gay orgies.
A source close to the LGBT community told CairoScene that “There have been a number of arrests in the last few months linked to these applications.”
“It baffles me how easily people are willing to share such personal information in a country like Egypt – it is beyond stupid. I would advise anyone to be careful when dating online.”
Homosexuality isn’t specifically illegal in Egypt however LGBT members are known to face hostilities in the country.
