Donald Trump demands apology from Hamilton cast after on-stage plea

By Fabio Crispim

Vice President-elect Mike Pence visited Broadway’s Hamilton earlier this week and was booed by the audience, prompting the cast to deliver an emotional plea.

However, President-elect Donald Trump has slammed the cast for ‘harassing’ Pence, according to The Guardian.

Trump took to Twitter, his favourite platform, to attempt to bring shame onto the cast by writing, “Our wonderful future V.P. Mike Pence was harassed last night at the theatre by the cast of Hamilton, cameras blazing. This should not happen!”

Gay cast member Brandon Dixon, who plays vice-president Aaron Burr in the play, addressed Pence after the show had finished and encourage audience members to share his speech online.

He replied to Trump’s tweet by writing, “Conversation is not harassment sir. And I appreciate Mike Pence for stopping to listen.”

Trump ignored the tweet and then ordered the cast of Hamilton to apologise to Pence in a second tweet.

Trump wrote, “The theatre must always be a safe and special place. The cast of Hamilton was very rude last night to a very good man, Mike Pence. Apologise!”

Other Republicans have reacted to the news, with former US House Speaker Newt Gingrich attacking their “arrogance and hostility” while Trump’s campaign manager Kellyanne Conway stating that Pence deserved “respect and a peaceful night out with his nephew and daughter.”

The President-elect’s response has received backlash with many tweeting to remind him of freedom of speech.
