“René Angélil, 73, passed away this morning at his home in Las Vegas after a long and courageous battle against cancer,” Dion’s statement read.

“The family requests that their privacy be respected at the moment; more details will be provided at a later time.”

Angélil guided Dion’s career from the age of 12 after first meeting the young singer in 1980. The pair eventually fell in love and embarked on a relationship seven years later, before tying the knot in 1994.

After first being diagnosed with throat cancer in 1998 and subsequently making a full recovery, Angélil underwent further surgery in December 2013 after the disease returned. He eventually stepped down down as Dion’s manager in June 2014 in order to focus on his health.

Dion revealed that Angélil’s cancer was terminal last September,  and that he had only “months to live.”

The late music manager is survived by six children, including three with Dion.
