Blade Runner concept designer Syd Mead has died at the age of 86.

Mead – who started his career as an industrial designer for the Ford Motor Company – was best known for his designs on Ridley Scott’s dystopian 1982 sci-fi classic as well as others including Star Trek, Aliens and Tron.

The iconic artist was set to receive the Art Directors Guild’s William Cameron Menzies Award in February.

Sadly, Mead passed away on Monday (December 30) of complications from lymphoma. His death was confirmed to the press by his husband Roger Servick, the BBC reported.

Mead is considered to have predicted the emergence of the self-driving car, or “electric herd”, back in 1980.
