US talk show host Bill Maher (pictured right) has criticised the resignation of Mozilla CEO Brendan Eich.

Recent events at the Firefox company were discussed by Maher and panelists during an online segment of his Real Time show.

Giving his views on Eich’s departure, the host said: “I think there is a gay mafia. I think if you cross them you do get whacked.”

Eich’s resignation came after it emerged that he made a donation of $1,000 (approximately £600) to a political campaign trying to ban same-sex marriage in California.

Last week, online dating site OkCupid urged users to boycott the Firefox browser to take a stand against Eich’s appointment as CEO.

After his resignation, Executive Chairwoman Mitchell Baker apologised on behalf of the company for not moving “fast enough to engage with people” after the controversy began.
