Australia’s 2015 Eurovision entrant: Our picks
By Nick Bond
Today was a momentous day for Euro-Australian relations, with the news that Australia will this year be invited to compete in the Eurovision Song Contest. Aussies have one month to figure out who they’ll send over.
We cornered the token Aussie in the Attitude office, our Web Editor Nick Bond, and asked for his picks on who’d be best to represent his country. Vote for your favourite below.
Kylie Minogue
We’ll start with the obvious one – Australia’s biggest pop export. Kylie may be a bit too big for Eurovision now, but we know she can pull a cracking three-minute pop song out of her hat and win this thing. Maybe she could enlist bestie Jake Shears to pen her a track?
Look, let’s be realistic here: We’ll happily take Dannii.
Sia
Come on, it’s not as crazy as it sounds. If there’s one thing Eurovision does well it’s an unconventional performance: gymnasts, ribbon twirlers, acrobats, fireworks. Now that Sia’s no longer showing her face on stage, she’d no doubt bring all the bells and whistles to her performance – plus she’s no doubt got a whole drawer full of killer songs she can choose from.
Bardot
If you haven’t heard of this dearly departed Aussie girlband (2000-2002, their time in the spotlight was brief but beautiful) you need to check yo’self. Think Australia’s answer to Girls Aloud. Oh, ok, The Saturdays. Aussie gays of a certain age have dreamed of a Bardot reformation for 13-odd years. NOW IS THE TIME.
Holly Valance
Now Holly Candy, this former Neighbours siren is married to a billionaire, so she’s not going to be doing this for the money. But if she can find a song as good as those on her stone-cold classic second album State of Mind, she could mount a comeback of Cher-esque proportions.
Ricki-Lee
This former Australian Idol contestant has churned out more than a dozen world-class pop singles over the past decade, and she’s an energetic live performer who deserves a bigger audience. She’s hungry for international success, and with the right song, she could nail this.
Jessica Mauboy
Arguably Australia’s biggest female pop star of the past five years, Jessica’s already graced the Eurovision stage: she was a special Aussie guest at least year’s ceremony, performing a specially-written track called Sea of Flags. Trouble is, it wasn’t all that good. Still, she’s got the vocal chops, so she can carry any song.
Madison Avenue
…If only to recreate their iconic performance at the 2000 ARIA Awards, in which singer Cheyne Coates was struck down with an ill-timed case of cotton mouth and spent much of the performance grooving intently while clutching desperately to a glass of water, waiting for a break in the song so she could have a much-needed sip. #thirsty
Courtney Act
Arguably Australia’s best-known drag queen, this RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant actually had a (short-lived) pop career back home: her sole Australian single Rub Me Wrong reached the dizzying heights of number 29 on the charts back in 2004. If Conchita can win Eurovision, surely Courtney’s in with a chance too.
Delta Goodrem
You Brits really turned on Our Delta once she hooked up with Brian McFadden, didn’t you? Poor thing hasn’t released any music in the UK in a decade now. Back in her home country, she’s still delivering high-class piano-based pop, so this could be the perfect platform to reintroduce her to a Euro audience (and don’t worry – she broke up with Brian yonks ago).
