30 LGBT people, places and things you need to know: Mobeen Azhar

By Will Stroude

While there still may be a long fight for equality ahead, and tragic events like Orlando proving that homophobia is still prominent in today’s society, there’s also plenty to be happy about, and so many reasons to be hopeful for the future.

In Attitude’s July Issue – available to download and in shops now – our editor Matthew Todd marks his final issue at the helm of the magazine with his list of 30 people, places and things that makes us happy.

And because frankly the national mood could do with a lift this week, we’re giving you a peek at a few of the people, places and things that made the list – up next it’s…

Mobeen Azhar

Mobeen is an award-winning journalist and filmmaker, who was nominated for a BAFTA for his BBC 2 series Generation Jihad, won an Amnesty International award for Panorama: The Secret Drone War, and was nominated for a Foreign Press Association award for Inside Gay Pakistan.

He’s now working on a two-part series for BBC 2 about British Muslim identity and his first book will be published this summer.

“At 16, I decided I wanted to change the world. I just wasn’t sure how to go about it. Journalism is all about documenting stories, lives and perspectives. I’ve interviewed convicted terrorists and been face-to-face with men who recruit suicide bombers. I’ve filmed with narcs in Mexico and in Thai prisons.

I feel privileged to meet people and tell their stories. I like getting to know what motivates them and contributing to discussions about the world we live in.”

You can read Mobeen’s feature, along with the other 29 people, things and places that make us happy in Attitude’s July Issue, available to download now from and in shops now.
