10% of senior BBC figures must be LGBT by 2020, says government
British Culture Secretary John Whittingdale has released his white paper detailing the future of the BBC.
The document, entitled ‘A BBC for the future’, has set targets for diversity, stating that the corporation should pave the way “given its role and public service mission the BBC should lead the way in truly representing the diverse communities it serves.”
It adds that “our television screens and radio waves still do not adequately reflect the society we live in.”
The targets set for the BBC in the paper state that by 2020 it should have “15 percent of senior leadership roles for BAME (Black, Asian and minority ethnic), 10 percent LGBT and 8 percent for disabled staff.”
The paper also insists that 15% of leading roles go to BAME actors and 50% to women by the end of the same time frame.
Channel 4 issued their own internal report last year, stating that their target for the proportion of LGBT employed by is 6%.
