Scott Mills was questioned by police under caution as part of an investigation into alleged sexual offences involving a teenage boy under 16, it has emerged following his dismissal from the BBC.

The presenter, who was removed from his role on Radio 2 last week, is no longer employed by the broadcaster. The BBC confirmed yesterday (30 March) that his contract had been terminated in relation to allegations concerning “personal conduct”.

New details have since linked his exit to a Metropolitan Police investigation launched in December 2016 after a referral from another police force.

The inquiry examined allegations of serious sexual offences against a teenage boy, who police have since confirmed was under the age of 16.

No charges were brought following the investigation

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: “In December 2016, the Met began an investigation following a referral from another police force. The investigation related to allegations of serious sexual offences against a teenage boy.

“These were reported to have taken place between 1997 and 2000. As part of these enquiries, a man who was in his 40s at the time of the interview was questioned by police under caution in July 2018.

“A full file of evidence was submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service, who determined the evidential threshold had not been met to bring charges. Following this advice, the investigation was closed in May 2019.”

No charges were brought following the investigation, which was closed after prosecutors concluded there was insufficient evidence to proceed.

“We can confirm Scott Mills is no longer contracted to work with the BBC” – the corporation in a statement

Reports have described the allegations as relating to a “historic relationship”.

Mills continued working at the BBC after the investigation concluded. He joined Radio 2’s weekday schedule in 2022, replacing Steve Wright in the afternoon slot, having previously worked on Radio 1 and hosted a weekend programme on Radio 5 Live.

In January 2025, he took over the Radio 2 breakfast show from Zoe Ball. During his tenure, the programme reached an audience of 6.5 million listeners, making it the most listened-to breakfast show in the UK.

He was taken off air without prior announcement last week and replaced by another presenter before the BBC confirmed his departure days later.

In a statement issued after the dismissal, the BBC said: “While we do not comment on matters relating to individuals, we can confirm Scott Mills is no longer contracted to work with the BBC.”
