A new mural has been unveiled in Shoreditch to celebrate and support London’s LGBTQ+ community yesterday (3 July).

The artwork states in bold colourful writing: ‘Loved and wanted in London’. It was commissioned by the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan as part of the city’s ongoing Loved and Wanted campaign.

The unveiling was led by deputy mayor for Communities & Social Justice, Dr Debbie Weekes-Bernard, to coincide with Pride celebrations across the capital.

Speaking at the unveiling, Dr Weekes-Bernard said: “London is proud to be a beacon of inclusiveness, acceptance and diversity.” She said they are committed to working towards a “better, fairer and more inclusive London for everyone.”

Designed by London-based artist and graphic designer Hannah Dickins, also known as Disco Dickins, the mural aims to send a message of solidarity and visibility to LGBTQI+ Londoners.

Known for her sign painting and community-driven work, Dickins has previously collaborated with local councils and festivals on projects that engage directly with queer audiences.

Dr Weekes-Bernard said: This stunning new Loved and Wanted mural by Disco Dickins has been created to send a powerful message. While some are trying to roll back hard-won rights across the globe, this mural shows that LGBTQI+ Londoners are loved, valued and celebrated in our capital.”

The campaign’s purpose is said to be about sending a direct message of reassurance to Londoners in the face of uncertain and unsettling times across the globe.

The mural can be found at Turville Street, Shoreditch, and will be live until 20 July.
